Understanding web site traffic

Making money on the internet depends on getting people to visit your web site, and then buy something whilst there. Ultimately 'traffic is king', and like publicity, any traffic is always good traffic.

What's not always understood by newbies is that traffic alone doesn't guarantee success, although it sure helps.

Getting 250,000 hits a day to your web site, using the software some guru told you to buy, does not magically create an instant flood of money to your nice new PayPal account. It would be great if it was that easy, but its not.

Where does traffic come from?

The various ways people get to your web site include:

Search engines - mainly the top ten engines such as Google, Yahoo, AltVista etc.
Traffic exchanges - this includes both manual surf and autohit traffic exchanges.
Links from other web sites - this happens when a surfer visits Site A, and then uses a link on that site to go to site B, then to site C etc, and they eventually end up at your web site.
Direct user links - surfers using their browser bookmarks.
Email advertising - readers click on a link to your web site in an email advertisement because they want to find out more about what's offered.
Other sources - such as links included in FFA pages, banner exchanges, ezines, general and specialist on-line trade directories, RSS feeds, forums, blog sites and the like.
