Banner Exchanges
Banner exchanges are a proven method of generating traffic. Like every traffic building tool, you won't get fantastic traffic generation results from using them in isolation, but that doesn't mean their traffic potential should be ignored.
As you show the banners for other websites, you build credits at the banner exchange. Your credits are used up as your banner is displayed on other web sites.
Because this form of advertising has been around for some years, there are now hundreds of banner exchanges to choose from. Some cater to specific market categories eg. gothic, craft, martial arts, and christian sites etc. These niche banner exchanges can be useful in improving the targeting of traffic you receive.
Types of banner exchanges
There are quite a few variations.

Traditional banner exchanges - more suited for webmasters, but some allow you to display on free webpages. |

Banner traffic exchanges - instead of viewing websites, you view banners. |

Banner exchange sites which combine a number of different features, including more specific targeting. |
Ideally you want your banner shown in one market category, while you display banners from a different market category, that complement but do not compete with your site.
For example, below is a banner I'm displaying for AZAds. For each 10 displays, I receive 7 displays of a banner I have listed with them.
AZADs is actually a traffic exchange which also provides banner and text ad exchanges as add-ons. This is a good example of the many variations you can find these days.
Careful use of banner exchanges can be a handy way of enhancing your website by adding graphics to a web page that is heavy in text content. Because the banners will change regularly, this freshens the appearance of your page to your visitors.
Now of course, you could have used the space yourself to perhaps display promotional banners for products you are selling, or your affiliate links. And if you are only getting 1 show of your banner for each 2 that you display, (a 2:1 ratio is the usual exchange rate), then it doesn't really seem like a good deal. Or is it?
